The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico appears to have reached a public relations tipping point, with pundits and ordinary people turning against President Obama’s response.
Marc Ambinder notes that it “became an existential crisis immediately, but it wasn’t seen as one immediately,” while a new Pew Research Center poll finds that 92% of Americans view the spill as either a serious problem or a major environmental disaster.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that “the tenuous alliance among the Obama administration, the oil firm BP and Gulf Coast officials was visibly fraying,” as all sides grapple with the practical and political fallout.
However, the White House may still be able to avoid the label of “Obama’s Katrina.” The same poll found that slightly more approve of Obama’s handling of the oil leak than disapprove, 38% to 36%, while a sizable 26% have no opinion yet.
New York Times: “The recriminations over the performance of BP and the Obama administration could subside if the latest effort to kill the well, now scheduled for Wednesday morning, succeeds.”
