Optimist:

“If we don’t win this, 2010 will be hell for Democrats.”

— Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), quoted by The Hotline, on the U.S. Senate special election in Massachusetts.

I agree with what you said, Cyndi, and I don't think that it is too late to remind the people of Massachusetts of the truth. However, time is of the essence, so whatever it takes to beat the neocon/right-wing extremist fair and square, it has to be done now. Otherwise,…

Nate Silver did a great article arguing turn out isn't good enuf. I'll quote him:

"Coakley's latest attempt at persuasion — a commercial tying Scott Brown to the national GOP agenda — feels like the right tune sung in the wrong key.

Voters need to be reminded of just how oppositional the Republicans in Washington have become — voting with near unanimity against not just the health care reform bill (which the commercial strangely sidesteps) but also the fair pay act for women, the jobs bill, the cap-and-trade bill (which ought to be popular in Massachusetts), the financial regulation bill, and the stimulus package. Then they need to be persuaded that Brown will support that pattern of obstruction and be a pawn in the Republicans' arsenal. Really, then, I'd take this commercial out of rotation and replace it with two separate spots (or one 60-second spot) which tackle the two flavors of the argument in a less compressed way. And Coakley could probably also use a third spot as a closer, which talks more optimistically about the Obama agenda, the Kennedy legacy, and relatively popular upcoming programs like the jobs bill."

I watched this last debate on C-Span…and Brown did not do well. A lot of his argument against healthcare, closing of Gitmo, torture and even basic economic points was just weird and amateurish.

Coakley was really did much better, then again she's a former prosecutor and knows how to make her points.

I just got an e-mail from John Spears, who is OFA's state director in Massachusetts, and according to him, it sounds like that there are some people in Massachusetts that don't even know about the special election. Let me copy and paste part of the e-mail message, so everyone can have an idea of the gravity of the situation:

"In just 7 days, folks here will vote in a special election to pick their next senator. The race is coming down to the wire, and we have to do everything we can to ensure that progressive champion Martha Coakley wins.

Unless we all join together in this moment, Ted Kennedy's Senate seat could fall into the hands of Scott Brown, Martha's opponent and a right-wing reactionary who has sworn to defeat health insurance reform — the late Senator's life's work.

But with this special election happening at an unusual time, many voters don't know where or when to vote, and some don't yet realize an election is happening at all."

If anybody has a way to pass on the word in any shape or form (like via phone call and via e-mail), then do so. Time is of essence. Also, I recommend everyone to go to http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/obamaforamerica/gGG5LV for more information and details on how you can help. Most important of all, don't let the right-wing extremists cheat us out of a promising senator.

    'Nuff said!
